PLOT

In the midst of an unspecified apocalypse, Los Angeles resident Will (Theo James) is trying to get home to Seattle to find his pregnant girlfriend Samantha (Kat Graham). His journey is complicated by the fact that all forms of communication and transportation have been crippled.

With the help of a stranger named Tom (Forest Whitaker), Will sets out on a road trip across the country in an attempt to reach Samantha before it’s too late. Along the way, the two men must contend with lawless bands of survivors, roving gangs of looters, and the dangers posed by the ever-changing landscape.

RECEPTION

Critical reception for How It Ends has been largely negative. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a approval rating of 22% based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 3.85/10.

The site’s critical consensus reads: “Ends badly. How It Ends is a well-intentioned but plodding end-of-the-world thriller that wears out its welcome long before the credits roll.” On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the film has a score of 37 out of 100 based on 5 critics, indicating “generally unfavorable reviews”. The film was not screened for critics prior to its release.

Writing for Variety, Peter Debruge gave the film a negative review, criticizing the film’s “preposterous” plot and calling it a “dumb summer movie”. IGN’s Scott Collura awarded the film a score of 3.5 out of 10, writing that “How It Ends is a very bad movie, one that’s not even saved by its few moments of unintentional comedy.” In a positive review, The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck called the film “a reasonably diverting end-of-the-world thriller” and praised James’ performance. The A.V. Club’s Katie Rife gave the film a “C” grade, writing that it “isn’t a total disaster, but it isn’t anything you haven’t seen before.”

BOX OFFICE

How It Ends was released on Netflix on July 13, 2018. The film was not given a theatrical release. In its first week of release, the film was watched by over 4 million people.  The film’s budget is unknown, but it is estimated to be around $30 million.

How it Ends is a new original film on Netflix, written and directed by David M. Rosenthal. The film stars Theo James, Kat Graham, and Nancy Sorel. Theo James plays Will, a man who is trying to get home to Los Angeles from Seattle so he can be with his pregnant fiancée (Kat Graham). The journey is made more complicated by the fact that a mysterious apocalyptic event has occurred, cutting off all communication and power.

The film is set in the present day, and while the apocalypse is never explicitly named, it seems to be some sort of EMP (electromagnetic pulse) that has taken out all technology. This means no cell phones, no cars, no internet, and no television. Will has to rely on his wits and the help of strangers to make it home. The film is a bit of a slow burn, but it’s ultimately a gripping thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. The acting is great across the board, and the film’s cinematography is top-notch. If you’re looking for a good suspenseful film to watch on Netflix, How it Ends is definitely worth checking out.

RATING: 3.5/5
