What are the Reasons Why There’s so Much Disk Space Occupied by System Data?

System Data can sometimes take up a lot of space on your device. That’s happening quite often, especially for many people who haven’t reinstalled their OS for a while. At its core, system data entails things that are not part of the basic categories of Mac storage.

That gray area in the System Data includes app cache, iOS backups or Time Machine backups, and unused disk images or temporary files. It also has the Mac OS info and files. Obviously, some of these files are mandatory, and others are not. So, the best thing that you can do in this case is to try to optimize system data.

Remove system junk

A Mac cleanup tool is helpful here, since it determines the system type of storage, but also files that are just occupying space. Those junk files are easy to remove with the cleanup tool, since it automatically identifies and removes such files. And in the end, your Mac will run faster, better and without any of these problems.

Optimize Storage

There’s the option to Optimize Storage in System Preferences/General and then Storage. Here you can turn that on and it will remove TV shows and movies. You can also see system data info, and you can remove documents along with other files. In here you also have the iOS files section. Those are older iOS backups that you should consider removing as well. It’s a great idea because it will allow you to save time, and it will eliminate a lot of potential space problems too.

Remove the Cache Files

Cache files are found in the Library folder, and here you can see info about what those cache files entail and what app they pertain to. Ideally, you want to delete unused apps and remove the cache files pertaining to that app. It will streamline the process and speed things up, which is always helpful!

Delete those old Time Machine backups

Time Machine backups are great, but realistically you just want the latest backup and maybe a few of the older ones. You don’t want to have dozens of them, as it’s just a waste of space. The best approach is to try and delete the old backups, so you can have less space. Reclaim storage by using the Terminal, and here you want to paste “tmutil listlocalsnapshotdates”, after which you press Return.

When you are running out of space, check and see why there’s so much System Storage eating up necessary storage space. Most of the time, you will notice that once you delete these files, it will free up space that you need. You never know when and how you need space, so optimizing and modifying things accordingly can help quite a lot. It’s a stellar opportunity and a way to save significant time from your side. Clearing junk files is a very powerful method if you want to optimize your device often!
