How Successful Creators Balance Authenticity and Algorithms

Being a creator in the digital age sometimes feels like playing whack-a-mole. After all, algorithms determine which content gets pushed out to the masses, and they base these decisions on factors such as current trends, audience retention, and watch time. And so, creators often find themselves so focused on hitting these metrics that they can sometimes forget why they are making the content in the first place and who they want to cater to. Unfortunately, this can have several downsides. Not only do creators risk losing who they are or burning out, but they could also lose their audience if their followers deem them inauthentic. So, how are top creators able to walk this tight rope?

Strategies Used By Popular Creators

At the end of the day, content creation is a business like any other. And the one thing we know about businesses is that they compete for the largest market share while grappling with uncertain environmental factors. Think about it in the context of airlines. They all want the biggest fleets and the largest customer bases. But the ones that stand out are those that continuously invest in their operations, more so in ground support, such as buying the best aircraft engine stands for sale. With infrastructure readily available, they can deal with hiccups as they come and go, rather than putting everything on hold each time an engine stand needs a repair or overhaul. As a creator, you, too, need to be proactive instead of reactive.

How?

Remain Transparent

Audiences tend to be very attuned to the kind of content that their favourite creators create. So, if you decide to switch things up to align with current trends, it is highly likely that your loyal followers will notice the change and may question your decision to conform to the norm.

To avoid coming off as disingenuous, which can cause mistrust, it is important that you communicate openly with your audience about the changes you are making and why you are taking this path. This kind of vulnerability shows your audience that you see them as part of your community and trust them with your journey, helping you build an even more loyal following.

Be Unique

As creators jump on one trend after another, some recreate viral formats just as they are. But while doing so occasionally might be fine for virality, it takes the creativity out of the picture. And if you keep doing this, your audience can feel like they are getting the same old content that they would get from another creator, which beats the whole purpose of following you.

So, is there a way to use viral clips without sounding like every other creator? Yes! It all comes down to putting your own spin on trends. Also, when adapting content for other platforms, be sure to tailor it to match each platform’s rules and norms. This way, the algorithm still pushes your content out to people, but the added twist helps you stand out from the fray.

Maintain Consistency

The algorithms love it when creators post frequently, which is why some creators post several times a day. And with content creation being a numbers game, such creators often get a lot of engagement. However, one thing suffers – their creativity. After all, being original when creating several pieces of content a day is arguably difficult.

Successful creators do not chase numbers alone; they also maintain their originality by sticking to reasonable posting schedules. For example, you can post one unique video 3 times a week while punctuating the other days with viral trends. This way, you remain original while posting enough content to keep your audience engaged and the algorithm happy.

And while you are at it, do not forget to engage with your community, as these are the people who remain by your side regardless of which way the algorithm points.
